The Franchise Affair The Franchise Affair by Josephine Tey

My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Fun book. I'm still reading things at an excruciatingly slow pace so I definitely didn't enjoy it like I should have. But fun to read something out of my mileau. It felt like a lot of B&W movies that I watched as a kid in the summers when I was obsessed with AMC.

No sleeping in on Saturday. Usually Abby and I run down town at Town Lake on Saturdays but we needed to be home early so we ran at a the neighborhood park instead. Cinnamon is always ready to go.

Our ward has a Memorial Day breakfast and kids bike parade every year and somehow a scheduling conflict moved it to today. It was nice being able to enjoy it outside since the weather was nice. I got most of these photos from a photographer in our ward that was nice enough to share. The girls must have circled the parking lot 50 times before the group got tired and fizzled out.

Birthday party number 1. We only got to stay for a short while, but considering this handsome gentleman has been on Sylvie's short list for future matrimony we couldn't miss it all together. Tessa came along to keep me company and played with the birthday boy's little sister.

Birthday party number 2. A wild and noisy affair at a family entertainment joint way North of town. Glow Golf and lots of arcade action. Fun but exhausting.

I got a half an hour power nap after the birthday party and then back at it. We went down to Zilker Park and rented a canoe to go out on Town Lake. I've been wanting to do this since we moved and it was absolutely fantastic. It was warm in the sun, but there were some clouds and a breeze so it was just amazingly pleasant. I can't believe we waited this long and am so glad our friends invited us to go. I was sad this morning not to get pictures of a run at Town Lake to include in this little blog, but pictures of it from the water are even better. What a beautiful city!

After the lake we went out to dinner with our friends at Phil's Icehouse just north of down town. Fabulous! The best hamburger buns I've ever, ever had and sweet potato fries as well. I haven't eaten a hamburger in several years now but veggie burgers are all right by me because it's really the trappings that I really crave. Amy's Ice Cream shares the space with Phil's and I didn't even want ice cream when the girls had theirs. Now that is a good burger!

Up for scriptures. I wanted to sleep in today really bad but didn't so I'm counting that as a win!

Sylvie loves, loves, loves Fiber One Caramel Delight. Worst cereal name ever in my opinion and Sylvie just calls it "my favorite cereal".

Dropping off the girls. The pick up/drop off line at this school is ridiculous so I (and lots other parents) just drop them off about a half a block away across from the school. We'll pretend they walk to school.

Blogging and work. I wanted to go work in my yard because it's a nice morning, but work beckons. I try really hard to be done with work before the girls are done with school and that means pretty much all of my alone hours are eaten up with work and yoga.

Ashtanga is my regular class on Fridays. I wasn't sure I was up to it, I'm feeling a little slower than normal this morning and it's a really hard class. But I'm glad I went. This teacher is one of the most demanding of all of my sweaty yoga classes. But it feels great when you've made it through.

Back at work. GCC is officially on their summer office hours and Fridays are off, but I haven't gotten in all my hours for the week so I'm back again today. Once the girls are home for the summer I'll switch to 4 five hour days instead of 5 four hours days.

Today's soundtrack:

  • Damien Rice - O
  • Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - Deja Vu
  • The Shins - Wincing the Night Away

  • Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
  • The Police - Every Breath You Take

A quick trip to Costco on our way home. Usually I have to bribe the girls with churros to keep them happy, but I promised a "quick" trip. Is there such a thing as quick at Costco? I swear this is the most restrained shopping cart I've had at Costco in years and it still came to triple digits at the register. Costco is a love hate thing with me.

Back at home helping Sylvie wrap birthday gifts. She has two parties tomorrow. She was invited to three but I told her she had to choose. Too much!

Making veggie kabobs for our BBQ swim with friends this evening.

While Sylvie colored. Tessa no doubt was off with her neighborhood BFF. Tessa invited two friends to the soiree this evening because you can never be without your BFFs.

We invited some friends to meet us at our pool for a little BBQ and swim. The water is really not warm enough for actual swimming and I didn't get in deeper than my ankles, but it was fun to get together with friends and watch the kiddies enjoy themselves.

We were no doubt exhausted by the time we came home. I just just exhausted enough that putting the whiny girls to bed was too much work. Here's the coy Tessa convincing us that it's not really bed time. We watched an episode of the nature show Life instead. They thankfully fell asleep so there was no more arguing about bedtime.

Every once in a while when the alarm clock doesn't do the trick, I have to lug myself upstairs and physically rouse Sylvie from her bed. This is never pretty.

The girls are off to school. They have been remarkably patient with my endless picture taking. I'm guessing at sometime during this week the smiles will disappear and be replaced with rolling eyes.

Running with Abby at Dick Nichols park. The wildflowers have changed again and now there is crazy yellow everywhere. The beautiful trails within minutes of my house gives me an immense amount of joy. Biophelia people.

Time to pick up the girls. Sylvie has really been exhausted in the afternoons this week. She hung onto me trying to fall asleep while we waited for Tessa. A silly Tessa that I had to struggle to get a picture of.

Tessa takes piano lessons on Thursdays after school. Sylvie has been begging to be included all year and she is finally going to start this summer. Today Sylvie fell asleep in the car on our drive over so I sent Tessa in on her own and I sat in the car with Sylvie and read blogs on my phone.

Back home and I was exhausted. Starting in on a lovely headache too so I sacked out on the couch to watch a movie. Sylvie has been asking about dictionaries lately so I found her our children's dictionary and she sat with me and read entries. She was completely captivated with the process of looking up words. It was a thing of beauty to watch her amazement.

I was pretty grumpy the whole afternoon and especially grumpy with the process of taking pictures every two minutes so I put away the camera for the rest of the day. I'm finding this project a little tedious right now but am determined to see out the week. I feel alternatively bored and invasive about documenting everything this way.

Leftovers for dinner. Self serve too because I was on the couch with a headache. Tessa made herself scrambled eggs which she is immensely proud to be able to cook. I got Sylvie some crackers and cheese and then she whined the rest of the night that I wouldn't let her add goldfish and a granola bar to that meal to round it out.

Thursday night TV. I am sad that the season is over and reruns are soon to be upon us. Parks & Rec gets better all the time and that makes me happy. I'm a little bored with the Office right now. 30 Rock is my favorite thing ever - I was super happy to see Liz Lemon have a decent hair style for two whole episodes but am cringing at watching her wreck yet another relationship - no way they're really going to keep Matt Damon on the show.
