The Russian Concubine

I liked this book, but it took me well over half way through to really get caught up in the story. There were a lot of interesting characters, but they didn't feel fully drawn to me. It was good, but definitely not great.

My girls have been much more into physical play the past few weeks. Wrestling, fighting, dancing, using "the force", karate, all sorts of rough housing. Of course this is completely normal childhood behavior, just a bit of a departure for my two. It's been incredibly fun to watch. Until the inevitable tears that is :-)

The video is ridiculously long. Just too sentimental/lazy to edit it.

Mega First Day

First Day of School! It really doesn't get any better than that. It was a little hectic and Sylvie's seeming major drained after being gone all day. But definitely a success. Sylvie asked me after school if she was going to get money for going to school. As if she were now going to draw a salary for all of her "work". Wouldn't that be a great idea?

So both my girls are in school now and for the first time I really have a mini life of my own for 6-7 hours a day. I now have actual time set aside to get my work done and I'm even able to take yoga classes. It feels like such a luxury. I was emotional seeing Sylvie off this morning and really excited to pick them both up, but it feels good and right.

The Greatest Show on Earth

We went to the cicrus on Saturday. It's been over a decade since I've been and it was really fun. I love the acrobatics and dare devil stuff. Those guys racing around on motorcycles in that globe still totally freaks me out. Fun day.

This book was great a second time too. The message of story and versions of the truth is really powerful in this book. It is so easy for family stories to be lost. Especially considering how separate the lives of men and women were at the time, it's no wonder that women are virtually nameless in the Bible. Keeping in mind that it's fiction, I just really appreciated the chance to find some personality and flesh behind the characters and relate to them as actual people.

Some better shots of the new do. I'm loving it completely. I haven't had it this short in many years and I was nervous for that very reason, but I had forgotten how liberating it is not to have much hair to worry about.

"You act like you're 15 when your sisters are around"

Proposition: I need new lip gloss.
Corollary: But those sunglasses glasses are just so *cute*!

BTW I chopped my hair off :-)

Is it time for school to start yet?

Please? Pretty please?

Don't get me wrong. My girls have been lovely and I'm enjoying them around. My motivations are not to get rid of them (not completely anyway) but I just love small fresh starts and the tidy schedule to go with them. I'm planning to actually join a yoga studio once school starts and I'm salivating over the prospect of really sinking into my practice. I've also just agreed to run a 5K this fall with some friends and am amazed with myself since I pretty much hate running. But for a few days until our training starts the idea of running sounds very productive of me. So here's to my lovely calendar and fresh starts!

Validation for my complaints

Here's a lovely bit from yesterday's paper. I guess 2008 and 2009 have been record hot summers in Austin. Lucky me.

Party time

This was one of my favorite birthday parties yet. My sisters did all of the decorations and Tessa took care of the games. It doesn't get any better than that! Sylvie had super great fun with her friends and it was a great way to celebrate five-ness.

We are family

My brother Ben flew back home today and it made me sad to see him go. It meant a lot to me to have him come see our lovely little home. It's been a really great week having my siblings all together. It's been about a year and a half since all four of us were together and I know those times are precious. I laugh a lot harder and feel a lot younger when I'm with them. (Well, mostly feel younger. Sometimes having such young siblings truly has the opposite effect.)

Birthday! Birthday! Birthday!

My Sylvie turned five! I remember being five. I loved five. Crazy that my baby is there.

We had lunch out and then went to South Congress to visit the shops there. The girls had fun dressing up like Mexican wrestlers at Tesoro's. And of course we stopped in at the costume shop, Allen's Boots, and Big Top as well. It was crazy hot but couldn't let the whole visit go by without a little Austin sight seeing.

We grabbed some cupcakes on the way home from Hey Cupcake after much debate over which cupcake shop is truly the best. I've decided I'm a devotee of Sugar Mama's, but convenience won out since we were already in the neighborhood. I can't really argue with red velvet anyway. Yum!

We went swimming after being out and later in the evening tried our hardest to go see Music Man at Zilker park but it got rained out. Still a super fun birthday.
